March is Women’s History Month

Women's History Month, observed annually in March, is a dedicated period to honor, celebrate, and study the vital contributions of women to American history, culture, and society. The 2026 Women's History Month theme is "Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future". This theme recognizes women who are reimagining and rebuilding systems to ensure long-term environmental, economic, and social sustainability.  What will you do to honor and celebrate the women in your life/community who have worked/or are working on solutions that encompass financial sustainability, community resilience, leadership succession, and intergenerational equity. Whether developing green technologies, advancing economic justice, strengthening education systems, or building civic power – women are designing blueprints for sustainable transformation. Let's remember to recognize them and uplift their work!

March 8 is International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day (IWD) originated from early 20th century labor movements in North America and Europe to demand better pay, shorter hours, and voting rights. The first IWD was held in 1911 and the United Nations formalized the date in 1975 to honor women’s rights and achievements globally. IWD isn't country, group or organization specific. It's a day of collective global activism and celebration that belongs to all those committed to forging gender equality.

This March 8 join the League of Women Voters of Seattle King County (LWVSKC) and many other organizations at the IWD event at Cal Anderson Park.  LWVSKC will have a voter outreach table there. Various guests will speak, including Barb Tengtio, LWVSKC President from 11am - noon. A 1.4 mile march (that begins and ends at the park) will follow.  Bring a sign and be in community!

March 9-13 Is Civic Learning Week
More than ever, civic learning is needed to ensure that each and every person across this country has the necessary tools to engage as members of our self-governing society. As champions for democracy and civic education, the League of Women Voters of Seattle King County (LWVSKC) works throughout the year to further civic learning.

The LWVSKC is highlighting its civics work to encourage you to share out with your network of friends and business associates in order to elevate and grow civic learning.  If you have connections at high schools, colleges/universities, boys and girls clubs, girl scout clubs, etc please reach out to Sarah Beth Miller, unitliaison@lwvskc.org or Barbara Tengtio, President@lwvskc.org, Co-Chairs of the LWVSKC’s Youth Committee so we can discuss opportunities for civic learning with your connection/community.  And let’s pass it on — we all have civic knowledge to share!

Voting is habit forming and if young adults start voting early, they will most likely become lifelong voters. To support this, the LWVSKC has been working with future and new voters for several years to grow their civic engagement.

The LWVSKC:
  • Hosts voter registration/outreach events at high schools, community colleges and universities;
  • Provides free online civic education resources on voting and leadership
  • Presents LWVSKC’s free online civic education resources;
  • Supports practice voting;
  • Engages high school students to organize and lead candidate and issue forums;
  • Works with girl scout troops on their democracy badges;
  • And most recently conducted a successful text banking pilot to encourage voter turnout among young adults.
Democracy stays strong when all community members actively participate and prioritize civic engagement. And the best civic learning happens both inside and outside of the classroom. It is a lifelong endeavor touching every facet of society. Let’s all work to learn the essentials of government and how to engage; and understand the rights and responsibilities of citizens — and get out the vote!

Documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC) supporters are making every effort to impose requirements for voters to prove their citizenship when they register to vote through any possible channel. This includes a petition to the Election Assistance Commission, outside influence from state officials to members of Congress, and state legislative efforts when legislative sessions begin in January. The League will not stand idly by, and we need your help to stop these unnecessary requirements.

Additionally, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act has passed the House and could get a vote in the Senate at any time. This bill would require citizenship documentation to register to vote despite the fact that voters in every state are already required to affirm or verify their citizenship status when registering.

It is already illegal for non-citizens to register and vote in federal or state elections. Additionally, we have processes to ensure our elections are secure and that only eligible voters are casting ballots. State election officials have systems to verify an individual voter’s eligibility and ensure voter rolls are accurate.

Legislation like the SAVE Act is another in a long list of tactics, like strict voter photo ID requirements and limitations on voter assistance in languages other than English, which seek to make it more difficult for voters of color and naturalized citizens to vote. Americans do not need MORE obstacles to vote.

Congress must act to ensure that every eligible US citizen has the freedom to vote unimpeded by discriminatory rules rooted in fear and division.

Urge your Senators to oppose the SAVE Act

Unite and Rise!
“From the flagrant disregard for congressional authority and governmental checks and balances to defying Supreme Court orders...one thing is abundantly clear: our country is in a constitutional crisis." (LWV CEO Celina Stewart and President Dianna Wynn) We the people must fight back. That is why the LWV has launched Unite and Rise 8.5

Unite & Rise 8.5 aims to build a movement of 8.5 million individuals to unite and rise up against the anti-democratic actions of this administration. Launched in May 2025 and running until the 2026 midterm elections, this initiative is part of LWV's Women Defend Democracy campaign. Through the Women Defend Democracy campaign, the League will work to:

  • Provide Democracy Education & Election Administration Support
  • Restore and Defend Voting Rights Protections
  • Abolish the Electoral College
  • Protect Democracy Organizations & Institutions
  • Fight for Reproductive Freedoms
