About the League

Empowering Voters.

Defending Democracy.

Encouraging Informed and Active Participation in Government

The League of Women Voters of Seattle King County is a nonprofit, nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. Formed one year after the national League of Women Voters was born out of the suffrage movement in 1920, the League of Women Voters has been at the forefront of numerous civic initiatives and accomplishments.

Membership

With 600+ members throughout King County, the League is one of the largest local LWV chapters in the United States. We are a volunteer, member-driven organization; anyone over 16 years of age may become a voting member. Non-voting memberships are available to all others. Joining the League of Women Voters of Seattle King County automatically confers membership at state and national levels.

The League is Nonpartisan

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed participation in government, promotes understanding of major public policy issues, and influences policy through education and advocacy. Our positions are based on extensive member study and agreement. We are political, but we do not support or oppose any political party or candidate.

Today many issues are framed in partisan terms, isolating us from those who hold different views and splintering families and communities. Yet democracy depends on listening, discussion, and engagement across different viewpoints, so that we can work together for unity and the common good.

Founded more than 100 years ago, the League was created as a nonpartisan voice for free, fair, and open elections. Our founders believed voters deserve issue-based information—even when it counters their views about a candidate or party. They were often criticized for educating the public and advocating for issues that challenged the status quo, a dynamic League leaders still face today.

Issues Are Not Partisan

The League’s advocacy is grounded in comprehensive, year-long study and member input. Agreeing with a candidate on an issue does not mean endorsing that candidate, and the League never provides funding to political campaigns. While issues may evolve, our primary allegiance is always to voters.

Democracy is an American Issue

For more than a century, our mission has been to empower voters and defend democracy. In today’s polarized climate, this work is sometimes mischaracterized as partisan. But registering voters, protecting the ballot, expanding participation, and addressing systemic inequities are fundamental to a healthy democracy, a sustainable environment, public health, and broad prosperity.

Ensuring equal access to the ballot box, fair representation, and policies that reflect the diversity of our country is not partisan—it is essential to American democracy.

A More Perfect Democracy

Discrimination or harassment of any kind will not be accepted within the League, including but not limited to race, socio-economic status, age, ability status, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, gender, or marital status. The League is committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and belonging for all people. The League is an organization that respects and values the richness of our community and our members. The collective sum of our individual differences and life experiences represents not only our culture, but our reputation and the organization's mission and achievements as well.

Candidate Debates and Community Forums

We sponsor free, nonpartisan candidate debates and organize periodic forums on ballot issues and other important civic concerns. The League also advocates on issues such as education, transportation, land use, ethics and healthcare. We do not rate or endorse political candidates.

A Resource for Our Community

The Speaker's Bureau is a group of League members prepared to speak on civic engagement and election issues, as well as moderate candidate debates. Request a speaker for your class or organization. The League also monitors elections for condo associations, resident councils, and other organizations. Request an election monitor.
