Observer Corps

The Observer Corps is a group of League volunteers who attend government meetings and report back on how the meeting was conducted and what was discussed. Our Observers:

Make sure the government is following open meeting ("sunshine") laws;
Promote transparency and accountability in government through regular oversight;
Educate the public about what is going on in government; and
Identify issues for League advocacy.

The following King County Council committee meetings have been prioritized for 2023/2024:

Committee of the Whole (COW)
Budget and Fiscal Management Committee
Regional Policy Committee
Transportation, Economy and Environment Committee

Resources for Observers

A current observer corps member describes her experience this way:

It's a win/win! When you observe a city or county meeting you learn what's going on in your community, how well or not your local government officials are representing you, and you identify issues you believe need further attention by LWVSKC. You are learning and growing and also sharing this knowledge with the LWVSKC. I've been observing for 1 1/2 years and will keep doing it. I love constantly learning about my community and King County.

Aidan who was a high school student at the time at the time he participated in Observer Corps recounted his experience.

I am a first-year college student and a freshman at American University. I was a part of LWVSKC Observer Corps when I was a senior in high school. I was an observer of the King County Law and Justice Committee, and I think my time there was incredible. I think that being an observer is an incredibly important part of government. The work of Observer Corps volunteers makes these meetings more accessible to just normal people and helps people to understand government proceedings, while holding our elected representatives accountable. I think that the observers are important in that capacity. I also learn a lot about both law and policy during my time observing the King County Law and Justice Committee, and overall, it was just a very phenomenal experience for me.
